Awesome Scientists

Last week we had a visit from two scientists, Esther and Matt.  They came to do some experiments about sound.  When we got to Room 1 we were put into three groups.

In the first group we had to make a bongo drum with a tube and a balloon.  We had to stretch the balloon over the top of the tube.  It was quite tricky because the balloons were a bit small.  When you got it over it sounded like a drum.

In the next group we had to cut a straw and then when we blowed into it it made a sound.  It was the vibrations that made the sound.  I took mine home and mum said that if I didn't stop blowing it, she would take it off me.
Did you know that you can whisper through a balloon and the person listening on the other side can hear you?

Matt had some liquid nitrogen that was really, really cold.  It was so cold that he froze a banana.  He also poured some on to a balloon and all the air went out of the balloon.  As the balloon warmed back up, the air came back into the balloon.  It was really cool.

Esther and Matt made some ice-cream for us with the liquid nitrogen.  It had chocolate chips in it.  It was really nice and creamy.  Esther said it was better than real ice cream because the liquid nitrogen freezes it so fast that it doesn't get a chance to get icy, like other ice cream.  It was really yummy.

Dancing Like The Stars!

Dancing Like The Stars!
The last few weeks we have been getting taught how to do a dance called Ceroc, so we can perform to people around Dunedin. The people who are teaching us are John and Raewyn who teach dancing for a living. Here are some photos from our lesson and of John and Raewyn doing a demonstration.

The Police

On 23 March 2011 some police dog handlers came to our school. Their names were Brett and Andrew. They came with their dogs. They had toys for the dogs and Brett took one and ran off with it, then Andrew let go of the dogs collar and the dog went and sniffed and found Brett and the dog started to bark at Brett. Then Andrew put some hard stuff on his hands then he let go of the dogs collar and pretended to run away. The dog just came up and bit Andrews arms.

Our Awesome Discovery Time

This term we have been doing discovery with Rooms 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

We have been doing baking sessions and trying to make neo cubes. I learnt that neo cubes are very hard-Katelyn Phillips.  Here is Andrew working with the neo-cubes.  You have to try and make a cube - it is very hard.

We have really liked having to spend time with them and having fun and trying out new things.  These boys are trying to lift some heavy books by using a pulley

These girls are busy sewing.  They had to sew their name on to some cloth.  It was really hard getting the wool on to the needle.

We also set a goal at the start of the discovery time. Our goal this week was persevering at what we're doing and don't give up!

Friday Fun for Fours

tEvery fortnight the Level fours have a special fun time and this time we picked a water slide!!! Katelyn  brought her water slide for us to use. (lucky us)

This year for Levels we have to move ourselves This year we have to move ourselves to the level we think we should be on.  There are heaps of us on a four.

To be a four you have to be responsible, do all your work, respect others, and stuff like that.

Other stuff that we can do if we are a four is games time, shared lunch, water fight, movie - with popcorn of course, wheels day and a picnic.  We get to vote which one we want on the Monday.

We hope you enjoyed the photos of us!!!!

It was a really awesome time - we all want to be 4's next time.

first cultural group lesson

This is when we had our first cultural group lesson  with the juniors.

We are calling it cultural group this year because our school has many children from different cultures and we thought it would be good to look at some others.

We had to teach them how to do the moves in Toia Mai and if we had enough time we were allowed to teach them Utaina.

We had a lot of fun with the juniors but it was hard for some of us.

At the end we all came inside and shared what we had done.

Welcome back

Here's Room 6 and they have had a great start to 2011.  We took lots of photos at places all around the school but we liked this one best.  We're on our new playground equipment.

Lately we have been learning that we have the power to make our learning space better.  We are doing this by maybe having class meetings, getting a class pet, having a construction table, and more.  We are in groups and we have to find out what we want.

Our maths subject for this term is measurement.  Today we did perimeter and it's real easy.

We have been helping to design the class timetable.  We talked lots about when people learn best.  We had to fit in maths, reading and writing as well as all the fun stuff.  It was quite hard.

It sounds like everybody had a great holiday.  Some people even went over-seas - lucky.

Now we're busy practicing for the cross country at Balmacewen. We're all enjoying Room 6! The best room in the school.
